KENYA RED CROSS | SAFARICOM RESPONSE TO WESTGATE CRISIS

  1. Introduction

Safaricom Limited directly sponsors community activities, projects and events that make positive contributions to Kenyans. The goal is to impact communities in direct ways through support for community projects while generating positive publicity for the company.

The long partnership between the Safaricom Limited and Kenya Red Cross has been centred on the delivery of humanitarian services to vulnerable persons.   1. The Westgate Mall Crisis

 

On Saturday 21st, September 2013 shortly before 13h00 an armed group gained forceful entry into Westgate Shopping Mall and attacked members of the public with hand grenades and gun shots. There were simultaneous heavy gunfire inside the building which lasted for several minutes leaving scores of people injured and several dead.

 

The Westgate Mall crisis entered a third day with intensified security operations inside the Westgate Mall and within a 200- metres security cordon. According to the Kenya Government sources, the number of deaths remained at 62 and 175 casualties

 

  1. Humanitarian response

 

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has continued to play a leading role in alleviating human suffering occasioned by the terrorists attack. The interventions include, and are not limited to country- wide blood donation drive, psychosocial support services, tracing and restoration of family links and a 24-hour command centre at the Visa Oshwal Centre which is located in the vicinity of the Westgate Mall. In response to the disaster, Safaricom launched a nationwide mobile money transfer through M-PESA line 848484 that enabled the public to raise funds. So far an estimated 60million has been realised but the need gap still exists.

  1. Humanitarian Situation Analysis

 

The attack on Westgate Mall has been unprecedented in both its severity and the humanitarian challenge. There was mass casualty and fatalities which no single player would be able to handle alone. Victims are currently appealing for financial support to cater for medical bills that are mounting. With the initial assessment of the needs it is expected patients will require various categories of treatment from basic first aid to reconstructive surgeries.

 

  1. The proposed collaboration

 

From the onset of this disaster, the two sister organisations sought opportunities for possible collaboration in alleviating the immense suffering visited upon affected individuals, families and communities. This particular proposal seeks to apply the proceeds of the Safaricom limited funds drive towards addressing the most pressing needs in complement to the actions of the various organizations and agencies.

 

The main objectives of this proposal are:

[a] To ensure that as much as practicable, individuals who received physical, and psychological injuries are not detained or denied treatment at hospitals on account of unpaid medical bills; [b]  The cost of ambulatory services are defrayed to ensure sustainable service delivery; and [c] To ensure sufficient blood is mobilized for this, and similar emergencies in the near future.

Hospitals will be prevailed upon to waiver morgue fees but where this is not possible then a few cases will be considered
